Fifty years ago, the Carter family faced annihilation — war, blizzard, extinction. Nyx sacrificed fifty years of her own life to save them all. She planted a sacred tree and sealed a contract: in five decades, she would return to claim the tree and half their fortune.
Now the contract is due. Nyx sails back on a black ship. But Lucien, Vivian, and the others have forgotten her grace. Greed drives them to cut down the sacred tree. They plot murder to break the pact.
Nyx closes her heart. Pity ends. The reckoning begins.
