Two Taels Budget I Hosted a Noodle Banquet in a Marquis Manor

Logline Shen Yun, eldest daughterinlaw of Yongchang Marquis Manor, gets merely two taels to host the patriarch’s 80th birthday. She serves plain noodle soup to expose her manipulative motherinlaw Zhou Shi’s fund embezzlement and favouritism. Supported by the upright elderly Marquis, she secures justice and reclaims her dignity.

Plot Summary Married for three years, Shen Yun constantly suffers dowry losses from motherinlaw Zhou Shi. Zhou assigns her the birthday banquet yet only gives two taels, hoping Shen Yun will cover costs with her private dowry.

Shen Yun cannot afford the upscale restaurant feast. Zhou feigns illness to avoid her request for more funds, and her husband Zhao Chong tells her to “make do with two taels”.

Seeing their scheme, Shen Yun buys coarse flour and eggs, keeps fancy hall decorations, and serves noodle soup with runnyyolk eggs to all distinguished guests, triggering shock.

Zhou flies into a rage, accusing Shen Yun of ruining the feast. Shen Yun presents evidence: Zhou diverted 200 taels of public banquet money to Lin Shi, wife of her favoured second son. Even after Zhao Chong arrives, he still defends his mother until his dismissive note is shown publicly.

The elderly Marquis presides over the crisis. He reveals Zhou’s plot, rebukes cowardly Zhao Chong and spineless Marquis Zhao Jianbang. Second son Zhao Heng returns the misappropriated 200 taels. Guests drop their pretensions and eat the noodles.

Postbanquet, Zhao Chong reforms: he quits drinking parties, learns accounting and offers private assets to atone. The elderly Marquis gives Shen Yun silver notes. Shen Yun withholds forgiveness, choosing to watch his realworld behaviour.

Zhou’s good reputation is ruined, and manor accounts get audited. A year later, Shen Yun handmakes noodle soup for the Marquis’s birthday, turning the simple dish into a warm family tradition.
