Nora, a PhD student in mermaid studies, comes to the emerald atoll to research deep-sea merman Kael—treating him as a subject who doesn't know how to court. She teaches him mating songs and dances herself. But Kael takes it as a courtship and abducts her, keeping her trapped in his cave. Amid her fear, Nora slowly realizes Kael is the sea-creature boy who saved her years ago—a memory she lost to a high fever. As captive and captor, they fall in love. In the end, Nora turns the tables, locks Kael in a lab to finish her thesis, then sets him free, and proposes. They have a hybrid son, Milo.
