At age seven, Emma Doyle drank poison meant for Stephen Grayson, freezing her mind in childhood. Years later, a twist of fate lands her in the wrong bridal sedan chair — that of Governor Dylan Everett. This unintended husband flies kites for her, builds her swings, seeks out doctors, and patiently teaches her to write her name stroke by stroke. For the first time, she experiences tenderness. When the truth emerges and her childhood love returns, she faces a choice. She chooses the man who taught her love. The firefly, rescued from the mud, glows in the eyes of the one who sees her, becoming a light for both.
