Arthur Morgan awakens from a shallow grave to find himself in a world he does not know. He tracks his nemesis Micah Bell to Oak Hill Manor, where he meets Mary Linton in the garden — she has no memory of him at all. Arthur slips through the estate, crossing paths with Mary again and again, each time forcing himself not to reach for her. Micah discovers Arthur and sets a trap. In the gunfight, Micah deliberately shoots Mary. She dies in Arthur's arms, her last words a whisper that he has kind eyes, even though she never knew his name. Arthur lays her down, rides Micah down at the edge of a canyon, and finishes him with a single shot. At dawn, he buries Mary beneath an old oak tree — where the sun hits first. He mounts his horse and rides east into the light, knowing he will carry her with him every step of the way. He just keeps riding.
