To save her younger brother, Madeline Cooper was forced into a marriage alliance with Felix Stewart. Yet on the day of their engagement, she discovered he was having an affair with his secretary—and that they were even plotting to kill her. Trapped in a desperate situation, she turned to the illegitimate son of the Stewart family: Nathaniel Stewart, her fiancé's bitter rival. Initially, she only intended to switch her marriage partner to protect herself. But as he repeatedly saw through her schemes, yet time and again shielded her from danger, she found herself gradually falling for him against her will. She couldn't give in to this love, though. Her marriage had never been about anything other than saving her brother.
