Veyra, a vampire archivist, discovers a perfectly preserved human skeleton—and a biology textbook that defines "Life" as something her kind has never known: growth, change, and death. Their separate investigations lead them to the Dead Zone, a radioactive wasteland that is actually an observation post left by an alien civilization called The Architects.
