Desperate to afford medicine for her daughter Ivy, Ilara accepts work caring for young Rowan at the Northern Dragon Palace. Mocked by elegant dragon women for her soft, full figure, she has no idea that years earlier she rescued the wounded ruler Kael during a violent storm. A curse makes every woman's touch unbearable to him, except hers. As danger, false accusations, and cruel enemies close in, Kael exposes an elder's betrayal and chooses Ilara openly. Before the court that once shamed her, he asks her to stand beside him as his equal, and she claims her place as queen without hiding who she is.
